Pure Offerings
They look like white mammoth butterflies,
Perched with nothing better to do than
Show off their metamorphosed beauty.
The magnolias are in bloom.
Born in bloom,
This towering, flowering tree is right
In the stern gaze of General Lee.
A living monument to behold
Where otherwise one would catch carved stone down
This historic Avenue
But today the rigid General has given
Up his pedestal to the pure offerings of blossoms
June stops her tears and clears her eyes
The pigeons dive for dinner
